Some crews gathered in the week preceding the race to practice and prepare. On Saturday 3rd April 2010, the skippers took advantage of stiff winds to fine-tune the boats and their crews. Later that evening the sails were drawn…. The start was scheduled for the Sunday at 13.00, and everything went according to plan. The first night brought on the first difficulties for some boats, when the storm force gusts broke equipment, destroyed sails and provoked some cases of sea-sickness. On day 2, the fleet had been reduced by 8 boats. This demonstrates the intensity of the race and the conditions one can expect on a non-stop navigational race such as this.
The rest of the pack continued pushing hard and some made great progress during this frenetic night of downwind racing. Having rounded the island of Palagruža and started towards the island of Mljet they encountered nice reaching conditions. Passing Mljet, however, long upwind hours followed, and the fleet stretched as the wind died and became thermal and unstable, especially during the night and closer to shore.
The fastest boat, the Class 40 „Boxx“ with a Slovenian crew, crossed the line in Biograd in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after a little more than 45 hours of sailing. They were followed by the Austrian „Celox“, in the same class, some 37 minutes later. The first boat to finish from the Bavaria 42 class was “Saint Tropez”, with a total sailing time of 54 hours and 4 minutes. In fourth place overall was the Dufour 44 class „Malta“, with a great 6 hour lead on their rivals.
