The Beaufort Scale

The current of air, which balances high and low air pressure, is called wind. We usually measure it with the internationally used Beaufort scale. Sir Francis Beaufort (1777 - 1857), a British admiral and hydrograph, devised this scale in 1806 by summing up the effects of wind on water, sailing ships underway and land.

Local winds

Croatian winds can be characterized as being light to moderate from September to June with occasional storms, while July and August are generally calm with more frequent storms.

During periods of high pressure, the Adriatic displays the classic rhythms of winds from the sea during the day and winds from land during the night.

The bora (bura) and sirocco (siroko) are the most characteristic winds of the Adriatic and are largely responsible for weather patterns. They mainly blow from October to April. The maestral, blowing from the sea, and the burin, blowing from the mainland, are most common in the summer months.

Several times a day weather reports are broadcast in Croatian and English. These reports include the current weather conditions, forecasts for the following 24 hours and any special messages or warnings.

Adriatic Challenge Becomes the Official Dealer of Bavaria Sailing YachtsBavaria Yachtbau, the world’s second largest Yacht manufacturer, has chosen Adriatic Challenge as the  official dealer of Bavaria sailing yachts in Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania.  The recent take over of Bavaria by one of the world’s leading private equity investors Bain Capital GmbH, has lead to a new direction in the way the company will sell, and provide after sales service for their sailing yachts.

“First we will target the Croatian market, and later on, focus on the other countries in the region”, said Robert Lang, owner of Adriatic Challenge.  He began the company in 2005 by acquiring a fleet of 20 Bavaria 42 match boats, establishing the world’s top one design charter race fleet.

Adriatic Challenge plans to stock new models at its base in Biograd, offering the opportunity for customers to try a vessel, and sail away as their new owner if satisfied.
